Skilled Migration Occupation List review commenced…major changes ahead?

Yesterday the Department of Employment, Skills, Small and Family Business commenced a review of the skilled migration occupation lists, due to be completed in March 2020. This will be the fourth review by the department since the skilled occupations lists were deemed unresponsive on 18 April 2017, the day it was announced that Subclass 457 – Temporary Worked (Skilled) visa would be abolished. The Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services and Multicultural Affairs recently announced that the Global Talent Employer Sponsored (GTES) pilot program, which falls under the Subclass 482 – Temporary Skill Shortage visa has been a success and will become a permanent fixture of the program. While there has been no effort to explain just how they have come to that conclusion, it should be recognised that the government has been using several different types of labour agreements including the GTES to address skill shortages that certain industries and regions face.

New Zealand and the United Kingdom have a close bond with Australia. Over the weekend the media reported dissatisfaction from NZ over its citizens being deported. The public register for sanctioned sponsors under the old Subclass 457 – Temporary Work (Skilled) visa and the current Subclass 482 – Temporary Work Skilled visa regime is analysed. Hospitality sponsors are overrepresented on this shame list making up around one-third of sanctioned sponsors since March 2015.
